When Will NSFAS Pay Allowances for 2022

In a nut shell
According to NSFAS website the allowances for funded students differ according to the type of facility a student has been admitted at. The allowances for TVET college students are not the same as that of the university students. Also the allowances for students with disabilities are not the same as of those without disabilities.
Cash withdrawal limits
It is also worth to note that for cash withdrawals, Should you wish to withdraw cash, you may do so at any of our cash withdrawal merchants, Checkers, Boxer, U-Save and select Spar stores. Note that these stores have daily cash withdrawal limits from R200 – R1000 per day.
Here below are the rates paid by NSFAS for different tertiary institutions. That is TVET students and universities students. Note that the allowances for the students with disabilities also cater for their special needs.
How much are NSFAS allowances for 2022?
Amounts indicated of accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines. These amounts will depend of the current rates of the universities and TVET colleges. If the fee has been increased, NSFAS will pay according to the fee required by the institution concerned.
Universities
For the university students, NSFAS will cover the following:
- Accommodation
As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence) - Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences
TVET colleges
For TVET college students, NSFAS will cover the following:
- Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in an peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in an rural area R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum
Students with disabilities
For students with disabilities, NSFAS also provide the following allowances: Assistive Devices, Meals, Tuition, Transport, Human Support where possible and Accommodation. Read more at nsfas.org.za
When will NSFAS pay allowances for 2022?
NSFAS has not yet indicated as to when they will start paying allowances for 2022. Recently, they have release list of qualifying students to universities and TVET colleges. With the release of the list, approved students may register with their institutions without paying any registration fees as it has been waived.
