NSFAS application dates for 2024 announced: National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said the applications for 2024 funding will open on 21 November 2023 and close on 31 January 2024. 

The reason for opening applications in November is so that NSFAS can afford the beneficiary shorter turn-around times for decision making, which is aligned to the financial eligibility assessment which requires updated South African Revenue Service (SARS) information. 

What does NSFAS stand for?

NSFAS stand for National Student Financial Aid Scheme. It is a government funded bursary scheme for the needy South African students.

Can I apply without Matric Results?

Yes you can apply for NSFAS without the results, you may only upload your results later after the matric results released. “It is also important that students note that they don’t need results when they are entering post school education and training for the first time. Furthermore, NSFAS is engaged in conversation with the Department of Basic Education to improve the application validation processes including verifying parental relationships and all these improvements will ensure that funding decisions are confirmed timeously,” Said NSFAS

I am a Sassa Beneficiary, Do I Qualify for NSFAS?

Yes you qualify for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme funding. The NSFAS Board also announced that it will continue to make immediate funding decisions for new applicant South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries. Immediate funding decisions mean that as soon as the applicants submit their applications they will receive an outcome. 

“The moment you are verified as a SASSA beneficiary, we will not require any supporting documents. In fact, all new applicants will not require supporting documents, except for learners with disabilities.

Who qualifies for the Bursary?

You qualify for a NSFAS bursary if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2023 or you are already studying at a public university or TVET college and you meet the following requirements:

  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify on financial eligibility
  • Your combined household income is not more than R350 000 per year or
  • Person with a disability with a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per year or
  • Must have email and cell phone number

How to Apply for NSFAS for 2024?

What if I get Rejected, Can I Appeal?

A student whose application for financial aid is rejected, or the financial aid for a continuing student is withdrawn , may lodge an appeal with the NSFAS.
