Unisa Updates | Unisa Suspends Five Staff Members Following Illegal Protest

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has issued a statement about the new developments following the graduation ceremony disruptions caused by protesting workers.

In the statement, the University indicated that the facility management has met and discussed about the recent acts of ‘lawlessness’ by the members of NEHAWU who engaged on an illegal protest and caused a scene during graduation ceremony on Wednesday, 20 April 2022.

The management has since resolved to pay the salaries of workers as it was one of the main issues that made the workers ‘not to be at peace’.

They also suspended five staff members who occupy leadership roles on NEHAWU pending disciplinary hearing. The University claim that the workers have engaged on illegal protest as they did not possess a strike certificate from CCMA. The university also labelled the activities that occurred as reckless and has caused harm to the image of the University and has exposed stakeholders to some risk.

The University also reported that they have increased security at its facilities as a result of violent nature of the disruptions. “Due to the violent nature of disruptions, the university has taken urgent steps to upscale security at its campuses, as well as to engage relevant government agencies which have the capacity and resources to manage security situations that fall outside the scope of normal labour relations disputes.”
