Social Assistant Amendment
The Social Assistance Amendment Act specifically seeks amongst others to make provision for additional payments linked to social grants which includes, the implementation of the extended Child Support Grant (CSG) policy for orphans in the care of relatives (CSG Top-Up).
Child Grant 50% Top-up
This policy intervention empowers the Minister of Social Development, in concurrence with the Minister of Finance, to make provision for a top up of 50% more on the child support grant for orphans in the care of relatives who are eligible for the CSG. These children will receive their basic CSG which is currently R480 plus an additional amount of R240 (50% of the basic CSG), bringing the total amount to R720.
This provision is an important part of the comprehensive legal solution to the foster care challenge, as it will enable relatives caring for orphans to get a social grant quickly by going directly to SASSA without first needing a social worker’s investigation, report and a court order.
This is not a new grant but rather builds on the existing CSG system in a form of a “top-up” amount.
Poverty Alleviation
The Child Support Grant is one of government’s most successful social protection interventions for children living in poverty. The CSG Top-Up will expand on this successful programme with a focus on the most vulnerable children – orphans living with adult relatives and orphans living on their own in child-headed households, who will now be able to access the benefit for themselves. This policy expands child care and protection for these vulnerable groups of children.
How to Top-up Child Grant?
In order to receive this benefit, applicants will be required to prove that a child is an orphan by providing:
“(a) certified copies of the death certificates of the child’s parent/s; or
(b) where the death certificate of one of the parents of the child cannot be obtained by the applicant, a certified copy of the death certificate of one parent and an affidavit by the applicant attesting to the unknown status of the child’s other parent.”
How to Apply for Top-up?
Caregivers who are eligible can now apply for the CSG Top Up at any of SASSA local offices and online as of 01 June 2022.
Applicants will also be able to track the status of their applications using the online portal. Notifications of the outcome of their online application will be sent by SMS or email.

This is totally unfair all kids need this top up 480 is little money, especially with this increase of food, clothes and school needs.atlist let this top up accommodate every child.
I don’t understand are saying this top up is for orphanage and for child support grand will be from 480 to 720 which means on 6 June we will get 720 for child support grand or this top up is only for the orphanage please help.
What happens to single mothers who earn minimum wage, do these children qualify?
Amazing work ..but I strongly believe all children should be treated equally..,with today’s day and age the cost of living is unbelievable…I suggest that we see all children with the same eye.
Kind regards
N.Moodley.
I think every child deserves this because , we are grandmother’s of children with no father, her father is at school like his mother, so we ended up safuring.
Yes I think all of our children are indeed of this money and I personally think that aal children should get that increase to….
I also agree with you,for every child to get a top up would really be appreciated alot as times are tough
It’s a good increase but all children need an increase also, times are hard nowadays R480 is not enough even for the kids who have parents. Too many parents are unemployed and they depend on this grant money. Now R720 would be a lot better for all children.
The grand money help us alot but it is just not enough there are parents who struggle for job and in the end it is just the 480 we really need a top up
Im so glad as a mother because we have been struggling alot to buy school stuff for my kids and also to keep up with their food and have lunch stuff we cant cope after my husband lost his job we lost our house so we had to move we staying by my mother inlaw witch she said that they gonna sell their house soon so we have to think about rent money that we dont have but i know our God is alive that’s why things are getting abit better for us i know we will get there in Gods name i say thanks to all who agree to the topup money for my kids God bless you’ll
It’s totally unfair that not all moms are getting the increase we are single parent’s surviving on that R480 and life is hard and tough out there
I think it is a good thing to do But I think everychild should have that increase because most of us as parents we are not working and it is very difficult to to all thing with 480 and food I’d very expensive,so please give all children that 240
This is not fair really I pay 400 school fees then that’s it.i sell sweets every morning so that my kids can get something to eat when they come back.if I didn’t find that bread 2 for 15rands it’s tough for me.
This is totally unfair what about us who have kids to without employment and only benefits from this child grant. Every child should get an increase not only orphanage we also struggling since you have seen the cost of living has raise up who can support a child with R480. Have you ever questioned yourself that? This will cause a strike because you’ll being unfair
Yes my dear I totally agree with you, in my case is more difficult because transport is 370 so how to feed and give my children a warm clothes with that change ?(we will appreciate if our government can consider every child needs and increase all child support, I think u
If both parents not working or divorced then government should consider a CSG top up also they mst go back to their drawing boards in life never put something on the table if not viewed in all angles
This is not fair at all, all children should receive this top because the R480 is small please consider unemployed parents and the kids
Our government is not fair on this one, orphans get R1050 and those of R480. Everything has become so expensive and still don’t consider adding for all children in south Africa but only for orphans. R480 don’t even cover for transport nor groceries..its winter a school jersey costs R230, youth unemployment increases daily Sassa if u increase for orphans, also increase for every child because there’s a lot to say about this
I don’t think that it’s fair that we don’t get top ups.All children should fall in this bracket and why must you apply for it.how do you feed growing children with that money and still have to dress them and see to their stationary and everything else.I think that this is utter rubbish.
It’s totally unfair that orphan kids get this to up and also to re apply for it.Bullshit we all in need of child support increase as they are the lowest paid by time we have to pay school transport 300 from 480 is gone so what do can we do 180 please consider every child on this increase many people depend on this child grant….ASAP
This is not fair we all need of that topup why choose orphan what abt csg grant money paid for what? Orphan and old age… yhoo our Country i give up
I don’t understand why is going to be top up support grant goes to orphan only..an opharn support to get the orphan grant not child support grant all children need that money it supposed to be all because they depend on that 480 and is not doing anything to them but you choose to give n live others that unfair
Yes my dear I totally agree with you, in my case is more difficult because transport is 370 so how to feed and give my children a warm clothes with that change ?(we will appreciate if our government can consider every child needs and increase all child support, I think u

I agree with u.. Not only orphans are in need of the top up.. All children should get this grant..
I do agree with that. I feel all children must be treated equally. All the children today need that. So please consider.
I surgest that all the children’s should get that top up grant because if u should buy a school uniform u are going to buy only shirt or shoe without trouser or jersey so they should also get it. Thank u
I completely agree with you everytime they just increase it by 10 Rand why can’t we at least get a increase of 100 rand or more there is alot of kids that needs this money on the Cape Flats.
I could not have said it better, whats the difference between a child thats an orphan and a child thats not.both of thems needs are the same and expenses are also just the same
Yes I agree.. How can you not increase the child grant and only consider orphans.. With a R480 it doesn’t cover the kids basic needs.
I also agree with you,for every child to get a top up would really be appreciated alot as times are tough
The are many unemployed parents who depend on this social grant and I think every child should get an increase because things are expensive this days ,this money helps with school uniforms, food for their lunch box, transportation and also feed them at home so I think there should be an increase for every child
That will be great because 480rnd isnt enough for a childs living thanks
Im so happy that aleast as parents who dont wont will help so much in many ways..R480 alone was little..
Hi I want to ask can my husband apply SASA for our baby becouse I don’t have an I’D
As single parents can we get 50% CSG Grant please especial those one that are getting pay for one child.
I feel that the top up should also be available to single mothers who do not get any financial support from their estranged spouse or the mother who does not know who the father is.
Best news ever for all those needy single moms out there
Is it true because we can not belief everting on social Media
Dear sir/madam
What about the poor of the poorest for the pension that parents passed away and the granny must take care of grandchildren I personally we deserved a better increase as we cannot pay for electricity and groceries that’s getting sooo expensive nit to mention the cab to take a person to town n back
Please please reconsider us is will be highly appreciated many thank Mariam Jappie
