The Budget Speech Sassa Increase 2022
The Minister of Finance today has delivered his budget speech for 2022 financial year. Amidst other things discussed, he talked about social grants increases. Here below are the details of Sassa increases from 2022 budget speech.

What is Sassa social grant?
Sassa.go.za explains: A social grant refers to grants paid by government to South African citizens who are in need of assistance. In South Africa, social grants are administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
Before we share the Sassa increase 2022, here are some of the grants offered by The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
- Grant for older persons
- Disability grant
- War veterans grant
- Care dependency grant
- Foster child grant
- Child support grant
- Grant-in-aid
- Social Relief of Distress
Here are the SASSA grant increases from the 2022 budget speech
The minister indicated that the grants will increase as follows: The budget Speech Sassa Increase 2022
- Old Age grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase).
- Old Age grant (above 75 years old) and War Veterans grant will increase to R2 005 from R1 910 (5% increase).
- Care Dependency grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase).
- Foster Care grant will increase to R1 070 from R1 050 to (1.9% increase).
- Child Support Grant will increase to R480 from the current R460 (4.3% increase).

Who can apply for Sassa grants?
Here are some of the requirements for people to apply for Sassa grants in South Africa.
Care dependency grant
Applicants who wants to apply for care dependency grant must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
- Child must be under the age of 18 years.
- The applicant must submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
- The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test (except for foster parents.
- The care-dependent child/children must not be permanently cared for in a State Institution. Read more at Sassa’s website.
Child support grant
For one to apply for child support grant, the following are to be considered.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The primary care giver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- Both the applicant and the child must reside in South Africa.
- The applicant must be the primary care giver of the child/ children concerned.
- The child/children must been born after 31 December 1993.
- The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
- Child can not apply for more than six non biological children.

Older Persons Grant
This is the old age people’s grant and for one to apply, they must satisfy the following requirements.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- The applicant and child must be resident in South Africa.
- Must not be less than 60 years.
- The applicant must not be in receipt of another social grant for him or herself.
- The applicant and spouse must comply with the means test.
- The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
- The applicant must submit a 13 digit bar coded identity document. Read more at Sassa’s website.
