Social Assistant Amendment

The Social Assistance Amendment Act specifically seeks amongst others to make provision for additional payments linked to social grants which includes, the implementation of the extended Child Support Grant (CSG) policy for orphans in the care of relatives (CSG Top-Up).

Child Grant 50% Top-up

This policy intervention empowers the Minister of Social Development, in concurrence with the Minister of Finance, to make provision for a top up of 50% more on the child support grant for orphans in the care of relatives who are eligible for the CSG. These children will receive their basic CSG which is currently R480 plus an additional amount of R240 (50% of the basic CSG), bringing the total amount to R720.

This provision is an important part of the comprehensive legal solution to the foster care challenge, as it will enable relatives caring for orphans to get a social grant quickly by going directly to SASSA without first needing a social worker’s investigation, report and a court order.

This is not a new grant but rather builds on the existing CSG system in a form of a “top-up” amount.

Poverty Alleviation

The Child Support Grant is one of government’s most successful social protection interventions for children living in poverty. The CSG Top-Up will expand on this successful programme with a focus on the most vulnerable children – orphans living with adult relatives and orphans living on their own in child-headed households, who will now be able to access the benefit for themselves. This policy expands child care and protection for these vulnerable groups of children.

How to Top-up Child Grant?

In order to receive this benefit, applicants will be required to prove that a child is an orphan by providing:

“(a) certified copies of the death certificates of the child’s parent/s; or

(b) where the death certificate of one of the parents of the child cannot be obtained by the applicant, a certified copy of the death certificate of one parent and an affidavit by the applicant attesting to the unknown status of the child’s other parent.”

How to Apply for Top-up?

Caregivers who are eligible can now apply for the CSG Top Up at any of SASSA local offices and online as of 01 June 2022.

Applicants will also be able to track the status of their applications using the online portal. Notifications of the outcome of their online application will be sent by SMS or email.

Amazing work ..but I strongly believe all children should be treated equally..,with today’s day and age the cost of living is unbelievable…I suggest that we see all children with the same eye.

    Kind regards

It’s a good increase but all children need an increase also, times are hard nowadays R480 is not enough even for the kids who have parents. Too many parents are unemployed and they depend on this grant money. Now R720 would be a lot better for all children.

This is totally unfair what about us who have kids to without employment and only benefits from this child grant. Every child should get an increase not only orphanage we also struggling since you have seen the cost of living has raise up who can support a child with R480. Have you ever questioned yourself that? This will cause a strike because you’ll being unfair

  16. Karu says:
    04/06/2022 at 5:57 am

If both parents not working or divorced then government should consider a CSG top up also they mst go back to their drawing boards in life never put something on the table if not viewed in all angles

  17. Enhle says:
    04/06/2022 at 3:07 am

This is not fair at all, all children should receive this top because the R480 is small please consider unemployed parents and the kids

  18. Freedom says:
    04/06/2022 at 2:33 am

Our government is not fair on this one, orphans get R1050 and those of R480. Everything has become so expensive and still don’t consider adding for all children in south Africa but only for orphans. R480 don’t even cover for transport nor groceries..its winter a school jersey costs R230, youth unemployment increases daily Sassa if u increase for orphans, also increase for every child because there’s a lot to say about this

I don’t think that it’s fair that we don’t get top ups.All children should fall in this bracket and why must you apply for it.how do you feed growing children with that money and still have to dress them and see to their stationary and everything else.I think that this is utter rubbish.

  20. Ashreena says:

I don’t understand why is going to be top up support grant goes to orphan only..an opharn support to get the orphan grant not child support grant all children need that money it supposed to be all because they depend on that 480 and is not doing anything to them but you choose to give n live others that unfair

I could not have said it better, whats the difference between a child thats an orphan and a child thats not.both of thems needs are the same and expenses are also just the same

    10. Moeneerah says:
      04/06/2022 at 1:40 pm

Yes I agree.. How can you not increase the child grant and only consider orphans.. With a R480 it doesn’t cover the kids basic needs.

The are many unemployed parents who depend on this social grant and I think every child should get an increase because things are expensive this days ,this money helps with school uniforms, food for their lunch box, transportation and also feed them at home so I think there should be an increase for every child

    13. Fatima bakkers says:
