Educator Assistant Duties South Africa 2025 PYEI Phase 5

For you to execute your duties well as a teacher assistant or education assistant, you need to know your duties, roles and responsibilities. The Department of Basic Education has put in place some guidelines about the roles and duties of the education assistants. Read more below about education assistant duties in 2025.

List of Teacher Assistants Duties

Here is the list of educator assistant duties from the previous cycle. The application for Education Assistants and General School assistants phase 5 will open on the 22 of April 2025. Full details here.

Educator Assistant Duties

Here are few duties you should familiarise yourself with before you go for interviews in 2025:

Prepare mark sheets, keeping of records and capturing of marks.

Hand out workbooks/textbooks to learners.

Hand out question papers, worksheets, class work books and marked scripts to learners.

Help the teacher with the photocopying of question papers, worksheets etc.

Make sure the classroom is safe, secure and clean.

Make sure that the learners you are working with are able to engage in the learning at hand and stay on task.

Support the social and emotional development of learners and report any issues when necessary.

Support the teacher in managing challenging learner behaviour and promoting positive behaviour.

Guide and monitor pupil progress.

Carry out administrative duties, such as preparing classroom resources.

Create displays and prepare classrooms for teaching and learning.

Ensure that teaching materials are available and ready for use.

Listen to learners read, reading to them and telling them stories.

Look after learners who have had accidents, need help, or are upset.

Provide support outside of the classroom such as helping during exams or on school trips.

Help with extracurricular activities such as after-school clubs and revision sessions.

Please note that, those are the duties of education assistants from the previous cycle. Phase 5 may modify the roles, so you need to check the 2025 guidelines before you attend the interviews.
