Education Assistant programme coming to an end in March 2022, will the contracts be renewed?

About Phase 2 Education Assistant Programme

The teacher or education assistant programme will be coming to an end at the end of March 2022. The current teacher assistants hired are part of the phase 2 of the Presidential Unemployment Stimulus initiative. They were contracted for 5 months by the Department of Basic Education under the ministerial leadership of Angie Motshekga.

Will the teacher assistant contracts be extended?

The question that may be on many of these teacher assistants may be, will the teacher assistant contract be extended? Will the education assistant contract be extended? Much as you may be asking yourself these questions, unfortunately at the moment there is no definite answer for that. There is no indication yet whether the education assistant contracts will be extended in 2022 on not.

How has the programme contributed to youth employment?

The president, during his SONA speech indicated that in total the Presidential Employment Stimulus initiative has seen more than 800 000 young people employed.

The president also mentioned that in the coming period, the programme would be reaching over a million people. He announced that Home Affairs Department will be hiring 10 000 IT young people to assist with digitisation of Home Affairs paper records. The minister of Home Affairs Department, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi added that these 10 000 young people to be recruited will be IT graduates from all provinces across the country. He also added that 6000 of these recruits will be females and 4000 will be male.

What are the duties of the education or teacher assistants?

Well teaching assistants have various duties to the teachers and learners in the classroom. The following are some of the responsibilities or duties they have to fulfil: 

  • Prepare mark sheets, keeping of records and capturing of marks. 
  • Hand out workbooks/textbooks to learners. 
  • Hand out question papers, worksheets, classwork books and marked scripts to learners. 
  • Help the teacher with the photocopying of question papers, worksheets etc. 
  • Make sure the classroom is safe, secure and clean. 
  • Make sure that the learners you are working with are able to engage in the learning at hand and stay on task. 
  • Support the social and emotional development of learners and report any issues when necessary. 
  • Support the teacher in managing challenging learner behaviour and promoting positive behaviour. 
  • Guide and monitor pupil progress. 
  • Carry out administrative duties, such as preparing classroom resources. 
  • Create displays and prepare classrooms for teaching and learning. 
  • Ensure that teaching materials are available and ready for use. 
  • Listen to learners read, reading to them and telling them stories. 
  • Look after learners who have had accidents, need help, or are upset. 
  • Provide support outside of the classroom such as helping during exams or on school trips. 
  • Help with extracurricular activities such as after-school clubs and revision sessions. 
  • To assist with teaching and learning programs in the school
