The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande recently addressed the media at his 2022 post education training sector talk. He touched on the NSFAS bursary in terms of how NSFAS has distributed laptops to the needy NSFAS recipients, number of applications received and plans for NSFAS to fund all qualifying applicants.
About NSFAS Applications
More than 900 000 applications have been received by NSFAS for the 2022 academic year funding. Minister said that of these applications, more than 80% of the applications are new applicants.
NSFAS Sassa Beneficiaries
He further said that, the Sassa beneficiaries who applied for NSFAS who have been accepted at public universities and TVET colleges will be prioritised in terms of getting feedback on their NSFAS status.
NSFAS Funding for 2022
The minister said that NSFAS is ready to fund all qualifying students who have applied and accepted in public tertiary institutions. NSFAS received 906,429 applications during the 2022 Application period, of which 85 percent have not studied at a public university before. In comparison to the number of applications received over the last three years, there is a sharp increase in the demand for NSFAS bursaries this year.
Digital devices assistance
He said that more than 70% of the students who needed the laptops have been supplied for. In total, NSFAS has distributed these devices to more than 80% of those in need of the devices.
